Flying can for many people be an exciting part of their adventure, but for some it can be a very terrifying experience.

While plane crashes are rare, we have seen a lot of coverage of crashes over the last few years and when you already have a fear of flying, reading about a crash in the news can only make this worse.

If you look at the statistics, the experts say that you’re much more likely to die in a car crash than in a plane accident. IATA (airline association) show that in 2015 more than 3.5 billion people flew on an aircraft and during that time there were 68 accidents – four of which resulted in 136 fatalities. The World Health Organisation (WHO) say that there were 1.25 million road traffic deaths globally in 2013.

But still, the fear of flying is deep rooted in our minds. Safety procedures, anti-terrorism measures only make us worry more, some people often panic when they are watching the safety video as the prospect of flying is very real indeed.

There are many ways to treat fear of flying, some take anti-anxiety medication, drink alcohol or even listening to music but what about a more permanent way to eradicate this altogether? I’ve treated clients with phobias and fears and I always say that you are not born with this fear, it is something that would have developed over many years and my priority is to unravel this fear to help you live your life again and enjoy your travel experience – not to fear it.

If you or someone you know suffers from a fear of flying or indeed a fear or phobia of any kind, I can help. Visit my website for more information.

Prepping for any kind of exam can be stressful for any student. There’s an enormous amount of pressure from peers, teachers and parents and sometimes trying to stay focussed can really be a challenge.

You can imagine the stigma that’s attached to do well and the strain can impact not only on mental wellbeing but your physical health too. Anyone taking an exam will feel stressed, irritable and in some cases depressed. A loss of appetite and headaches is also quite common.

When you’re feeling the pressure, concentrating can sometimes be a challenge, that’s because your brain is trying to focus on the task at hand, but finds it hard to do so when you’re stressed. There are a lot of things that can help, for example – good habits such as taking frequent breaks, drinking lots of water and eating well. Working in an environment that helps you stay focussed is also a key factor as is staying active – exercise is one way of de-stressing and feeling reenergised. Drawing up a schedule helps – keeping to a timetable of when to study, take breaks and rest can also be beneficial.

When I am helping students overcome their fears, I often say that pressure is a weight you as an individual have created and therefore it is something you can control. I believe in self-control and help people overcome their challenges through psychological reassessments which enables students to pin point exactly what concerns are creating this pressure and how to overcome this by logical assessment.

We all have a desire to do well, but it’s how we engage ourselves to do well that really counts.

At Mind 2 Excel, I’ve helped many students focus and engage with their exam preparation, here’s what one student had to say;

“I use to fear exams before I saw Kirsty. I would forget everything I have learnt as soon as I open the exam paper. Kirsty taught me techniques that allow me to deal with the anxiety and pressure and made sure that I was in a resourceful mind set before every exam”

So if you’re struggling, don’t suffer in silence, get in touch for a consultation!

Hi, welcome to this month’s blog post!

With Halloween round the corner, I thought I would write about fears and phobias that many people suffer from. Not just because it’s Halloween but because it’s a genuine condition which affects both children and adults.

A fear or phobia can be deep rooted and if you’re a sufferer, you’ll know what I’m talking about. It can strike at any moment and causes real problems even in adulthood.

It’s important to understand the difference between a fear and a phobia. Take these examples; you get nervous when you see a pit bull in a park, you’re scared but you still go to the park, but if you had a phobia of dogs, you’d stay clear of the park altogether in case you did see one. How about someone who doesn’t like horror movies, is this a fear or phobia? No matter how big or small, It’s important to understand the difference between a normal fear and a phobia.

So why do people just suffer in silence? It might be that they’re unaware of the help they can reach out for or that they’re wary of any ‘cures’ out there. Whatever the reason, no one should suffer in silence, there is help out there, proven techniques that can be used and can work.

I’ve helped many people overcome their fears and phobias and it’s genuinely made a massive difference to their lives. It’s immensely rewarding to know that I’ve made a real difference to someone’s life and more importantly, that they’re living their lives to the full!

If you’re a sufferer, get in touch and we can talk it through and discuss a tailored technique to help you.
