Flying can for many people be an exciting part of their adventure, but for some it can be a very terrifying experience.

While plane crashes are rare, we have seen a lot of coverage of crashes over the last few years and when you already have a fear of flying, reading about a crash in the news can only make this worse.

If you look at the statistics, the experts say that you’re much more likely to die in a car crash than in a plane accident. IATA (airline association) show that in 2015 more than 3.5 billion people flew on an aircraft and during that time there were 68 accidents – four of which resulted in 136 fatalities. The World Health Organisation (WHO) say that there were 1.25 million road traffic deaths globally in 2013.

But still, the fear of flying is deep rooted in our minds. Safety procedures, anti-terrorism measures only make us worry more, some people often panic when they are watching the safety video as the prospect of flying is very real indeed.

There are many ways to treat fear of flying, some take anti-anxiety medication, drink alcohol or even listening to music but what about a more permanent way to eradicate this altogether? I’ve treated clients with phobias and fears and I always say that you are not born with this fear, it is something that would have developed over many years and my priority is to unravel this fear to help you live your life again and enjoy your travel experience – not to fear it.

If you or someone you know suffers from a fear of flying or indeed a fear or phobia of any kind, I can help. Visit my website for more information.

Prepping for any kind of exam can be stressful for any student. There’s an enormous amount of pressure from peers, teachers and parents and sometimes trying to stay focussed can really be a challenge.

You can imagine the stigma that’s attached to do well and the strain can impact not only on mental wellbeing but your physical health too. Anyone taking an exam will feel stressed, irritable and in some cases depressed. A loss of appetite and headaches is also quite common.

When you’re feeling the pressure, concentrating can sometimes be a challenge, that’s because your brain is trying to focus on the task at hand, but finds it hard to do so when you’re stressed. There are a lot of things that can help, for example – good habits such as taking frequent breaks, drinking lots of water and eating well. Working in an environment that helps you stay focussed is also a key factor as is staying active – exercise is one way of de-stressing and feeling reenergised. Drawing up a schedule helps – keeping to a timetable of when to study, take breaks and rest can also be beneficial.

When I am helping students overcome their fears, I often say that pressure is a weight you as an individual have created and therefore it is something you can control. I believe in self-control and help people overcome their challenges through psychological reassessments which enables students to pin point exactly what concerns are creating this pressure and how to overcome this by logical assessment.

We all have a desire to do well, but it’s how we engage ourselves to do well that really counts.

At Mind 2 Excel, I’ve helped many students focus and engage with their exam preparation, here’s what one student had to say;

“I use to fear exams before I saw Kirsty. I would forget everything I have learnt as soon as I open the exam paper. Kirsty taught me techniques that allow me to deal with the anxiety and pressure and made sure that I was in a resourceful mind set before every exam”

So if you’re struggling, don’t suffer in silence, get in touch for a consultation!

Hi, welcome to this month’s blog post!

With Halloween round the corner, I thought I would write about fears and phobias that many people suffer from. Not just because it’s Halloween but because it’s a genuine condition which affects both children and adults.

A fear or phobia can be deep rooted and if you’re a sufferer, you’ll know what I’m talking about. It can strike at any moment and causes real problems even in adulthood.

It’s important to understand the difference between a fear and a phobia. Take these examples; you get nervous when you see a pit bull in a park, you’re scared but you still go to the park, but if you had a phobia of dogs, you’d stay clear of the park altogether in case you did see one. How about someone who doesn’t like horror movies, is this a fear or phobia? No matter how big or small, It’s important to understand the difference between a normal fear and a phobia.

So why do people just suffer in silence? It might be that they’re unaware of the help they can reach out for or that they’re wary of any ‘cures’ out there. Whatever the reason, no one should suffer in silence, there is help out there, proven techniques that can be used and can work.

I’ve helped many people overcome their fears and phobias and it’s genuinely made a massive difference to their lives. It’s immensely rewarding to know that I’ve made a real difference to someone’s life and more importantly, that they’re living their lives to the full!

If you’re a sufferer, get in touch and we can talk it through and discuss a tailored technique to help you.

Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) first came about in the early 1970s, and was developed by Richard Bandler and John Grinder. One of the fundamental differences between Bandler and Grinders research compared to others was that they found that the way in which people think about something makes a crucial difference to the way in which they experience it.

NLP can be broken down into three definitions to make it more user friendly.

Neuro is fundamentally our thinking process; it refers to our nervous system and how we use our senses to make sense of the world around us.

Linguistic is the language we use which includes both verbal and non verbal communication which influences those around us.

And finally programming refers to our behavior and strategies; the strategies produce wanted and unwanted behavior so can therefore be modified to enhance performance and reduce unwanted behavior.

NLP is a widely used technique branching out into all areas of life such as business management, sales, education, law, advertising, music and personal development. One particular area which is seeing some incredible results is in sport with athletes such a Tiger Woods, Andre Agassi, and Freddie Flintoff using NLP techniques to enhance their performance to help them be at the top of their game. There would have been a small handful of athletes at the London 2012 Olympics who were not using some sort of mental performance technique to be at the top of their game.

The techniques that come from NLP are used to model peoples’ attitudes, beliefs, values, thinking strategies and their behavior. Anyone can learn these techniques but they have to be curious and willing to experiment with it. NLP takes a different approach to dealing with problems compared with the more traditional areas of psychology. NLP takes a more pragmatic approach as it looks at how our thoughts, behavior and feelings work. There are many presuppositions of NLP, which give us a set of principles for changing our thoughts, feelings, and actions.

In my view the top three presuppositions are;

3. ‘If one person can do something, anyone can do it’ this suggests that it is not necessarily the skill but the attitude that differentiates people.

2. ‘You are in charge of your mind therefore your results’ this suggests that you are in charge of your behavior and only you can make you do something. The best goals are the ones that are set by the individuals themselves, as they want to achieve the goal not what somebody else wants them to do. The goal must be YOUR GOAL.

1. ‘There is no failure only feedback’ the most successful people are those who make the most mistakes as they are constantly gaining feedback and learn from their mistakes. NO FAILURE = NO FEAR.

				 ” I have failed over and over again in my life and that is why I succeed”.

                                                  – Michael Jordan

What is hypnosis?

Many people experience being in a state of hypnosis on a daily basis, how many of you have been caught daydreaming? Have you ever gone from A to B without having to think about it and if you were asked a question about your journey at the end you simply don’t remember? Both are a state of hypnosis.

Being in state of hypnosis is a pleasant and relaxing experience where you are in a heightened and focused state of awareness, which helps to promote learning and retention of new ideas. You are 100% in control throughout a hypnosis session.

Kirsty runs consultations from her office based in Chelmsford and Colchester. She tailor makes each session based on the individual client using a combination of techniques that she has learnt from Sports Psychology, Hypnosis and Neuro Linguistic Programing to enable her clients to reach their true potential.

The tools that your will gain from a consultation from Kirsty are transferable across all aspects of life. The great thing about using techniques like NLP means that it doesn’t use the common ‘one way fits all’ technique, it adapts and flexes to suit the individual, business or team to produce fast, effective and long lasting results.

You are 100% in control during all of your sessions. You will still be aware. Hypnosis is just like daydreaming and we all like to daydream don’t we?

Mental Performance Training can be used for a variety of limiting beliefs and can transfer across all aspects of life including:

Anxiety e.g. Exams, interviews, public speaking;

Confidence;

Depression;

Create a winning mind set;

Stop Smoking;

Access ‘zone states’ which helps to remove the ‘chocking and freezing’ some individuals experience;

Installing self-belief;

Speeding up or recovering from injury or helping to prevent re-injury;

Goal Setting;

Weight Loss.

This is just a few limiting beliefs that NLP and hypnosis can help with. The most important thing is that the goal must be YOUR GOAL.

Do you want to be an excellent athlete or an average athlete? A person who is motivated to get the best out of themselves or one who is not?
